What is IEN? Intelligent Eco Networking (IEN) aims to gradually evolve to be an advanced infrastructure for future Internet of intelligence and value.
IEN treats valuable content data as the first-class entity, motivated by data exchange, manipulated by artificial intelligence, based on the approaches of software defined, virtualized and programmable devices, additionally by comprehensively measuring the cost and gain of storage, computing and network resources, it also integrates decentralized consensus trust preservation and tokenized fine-grained allocation mechanism of blockchain to establish a prosperous mutual-contributed and mutual beneficial value-oriented networking industry ecosystem.
It was a novel new idea and research project on-going proposed by Prof. Kai Lei (Peking University , Shenzhen) and his ICNLab Group.

Why IEN
The traditional Internet is facing a huge change. At the physical level, the function-bound hardware causes that the network service is slow to deploy, has a single function, and the configuration program is cumbersome. It can’t meet the heterogeneous network communication environment where multiple protocols and multiple transmission signals are parallel. The hardware that can be flexibly configured and compatible with various communication protocols and transmission signals has drawn more and more attention.
At the network level, in the era of data content explosion, the main behavior of users in the network has been changed from mutual communication to acquisition of content. This requires the network to have a certain awareness of the content, which can help users find the content they want. It is urgent to make the original transfer-based and location-based transport architecture shift to a new one which is content-based and service-based.
At the application level, the applications related to artificial intelligence technology and blockchain technology come out one after the other. While gradually infiltrating people’s online life, it also provides new ideas for the development of the underlying technology of the Internet. How to integrate these new technologies into the network to form a smarter, safer, more autonomous and more comprehensive network architecture is the continuous concern of future network.
Ultimately, in the aspect of application scenario, in the future, not only the devices that people use every day, but also the Internet of Things devices hidden in various details in life, will join the Internet. The communication between people and things, things and things is bound to be an application scenario that the Internet must solve in the future. In addition, how to integrate, coordinate and utilize these network devices is a problem that the Internet will face in the future.
Thus, we need something new. Firstly, it can serve as a future network infrastructure based on value content data, data transaction driving, artificial intelligence control and awareness, software definition, virtualization, programmable device technology route. Then, on this basis, it can establish a prosperous mutual-contributed and mutual beneficial value-oriented networking industry ecosystem by comprehensively measuring the cost and gain of storage, computing and network resource, and integrating decentralized consensus trust preservation and tokenized fine-grained allocation mechanism of blockchain. That’s why we need IEN.
